Ein Rahmen, um Ihre Geschichte zu feiern
Die vollständige Vorstellung
Château de Montauban, at 28 Chemin de Montauban in Fontvieille, is a heritage and cultural venue associated with Alphonse Daudet’s stays in Provence. The Ambroy family welcomed the writer and his wife Julia here from 1863. The building combines a monumental nineteenth-century façade with an eighteenth-century Provençal farmhouse.
The château now houses a museum devoted to the village’s history. The permanent exhibition Fontvieille, détour par le Moyen Âge presents archaeological discoveries from the surrounding area. On the ground floor, the gallery, drawing rooms and library evoke the historic house through furniture, pianos and decorative objects from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The forecourt also contributes to the area’s cultural programme. It has hosted concerts organised by Les 4 Saisons and appears among the festival’s 2026 venues. Adult and school groups can visit during the winter by arrangement. Organisers of cultural projects should contact the château’s municipal team to discuss the format, spaces, permitted audience size and practical arrangements. Event conditions are confirmed directly by that team.
The visitor route combines a collection associated with Daudet and an account of local history. Manuscripts, paintings, photographs, prints, historic newspapers and the writer’s desk contribute to the experience of the house. Archaeological collections explore economic activities, places of power and medieval beliefs. The wooded park provides an outdoor setting for a walk alongside the cultural visit.
The municipality describes the monument as accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. Free parking for cars, minibuses and motorhomes is provided within the park. Two coach spaces are indicated in front of the Tourist Information Bureau, approximately 600 metres from the château through the village. Group visits can take several forms: independent or guided visits, treasure trails, visits with workshops and educational sessions, depending on the arrangements.
For an event in the municipality, the published procedure requires an authorisation request to the mayor, an availability check with the technical services and the return of reservation and agreement documents at least one month before the event. This general process does not confirm private hire of the château. The venue team remains the appropriate contact for considering a cultural project and identifying possible spaces, timings and uses.
