A setting to celebrate your story
Full presentation
Saint-Martin du Méjan Chapel is a cultural venue on Place Nina Berberova, near the Rhône in central Arles. This former church was converted into a concert and exhibition space in 1984. It forms part of the Méjan cultural hub, which also includes Actes Sud’s publishing house and bookshop, cinemas, a restaurant and a hammam.
The Méjan Association presents chamber music, baroque music, jazz, readings and conferences at the chapel. Its exhibitions feature the visual arts, particularly photography, and the venue participates in the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival. This range of activities makes it an established meeting place for artists, readers and audiences.
The tourist office lists 400 places on the ground floor and 250 in the upstairs room. These are separate capacities and must be confirmed for each configuration. Concert, exhibition and conference proposals should be discussed with the Méjan Association, together with the practical conditions for receiving an audience. Ticket prices vary by event; no general venue-hire price is stated here.
The site’s cultural role extends beyond one musical programme. The Matinées et Soirées musicales d’Arles, the Holy Week festival of sacred and baroque music, and Jazz in Arles illustrate events developed by the association. Readings connect literature with performance. Exhibitions feature contemporary painters, sculptors and photographers, with particular emphasis on photography during the summer season.
The Méjan hub brings film, books, live performance and the visual arts into close contact. A cultural proposal can therefore be presented to the association with a clear purpose: a concert, reading, author discussion or display of work. The chapel has its own programme and spaces. Activities in the neighbouring cinemas or bookshop should not be treated as equipment or services automatically included with the chapel.
When planning a group visit or proposing an event, explain whether it concerns the ground floor, the upstairs room or a connection with an exhibition. Show dates, exhibition installations, technical requirements and arrangements for receiving visitors should be discussed directly with the association. Its dedicated contact is mejan@actes-sud.fr, on +33 4 90 49 56 78. This listing describes verified cultural activities. Any request for a private family occasion needs separate, specific consideration.
