A setting to celebrate your story
Full presentation
The Musée du Vieil Aix occupies the Hôtel d’Estienne de Saint-Jean at 17 rue Gaston de Saporta, in Aix-en-Provence’s historic centre. Built in the 1670s and 1680s, this townhouse preserves reception rooms, smaller private rooms and painted, ironwork and decorative plaster features. The museum introduces both the architecture of an Aix residence from the Grand Siècle and the city’s history through its collections.
The displays include furniture, earthenware, Provençal figurines, objects associated with craft guilds and puppets from the speaking nativity tradition. Notable objects include the Fête-Dieu screen and a model of Giovanni Battista Gaulli’s design for the baptistery of St Peter’s in Rome. Permanent and temporary exhibition spaces support a programme of guided visits. The museum participates in the city’s heritage events: the September 2026 European Heritage Days included a display of Italian ceramics and visits to the cellars with the municipal archaeology service.
This is a venue for cultural discovery and group visits in a historic building. Collective visits and educational interpretation should be arranged with the municipal museum team; group limits depend on the route and activity selected. Organisers interested in a particular event format should contact the museum directly to establish whether it can be accommodated, along with any practical requirements and access conditions.
Published standard admission is €7, with an additional €3 for a guided commentary. The admission ticket also includes access to the painted trompe-l’œil staircase in the neighbouring Hôtel de Châteaurenard. Entry is free on the first Sunday of the month, and other exemptions apply subject to eligibility. Parking is available nearby. The museum is listed as unsuitable for wheelchair access, so visitors should discuss individual requirements before arranging their visit.
